weez fighters
last friday, i was in the presence of what could easily be the greatest concert of the year: weezer & the foo fighters. i say 'could' and not 'was' because of the ridiculously shitty seats my friends and i had. we were 4 rows in from the last row, near the end of the concert venue (continental arena, in jersey, which getting to was an adventure in and of itself...) i mean, the only worst seating that you could have is to be in the same nosebleed level, but all the way to the side of the stage, so that all of the lighting rigs would block your view, which incidentally, i had the pleasure of experiencing when i caught weezer in 2001. and since we were so damn far away, the sound quality was pretty shitty. inaudible highs and muddy lows.
but all in all, the concert was more than worth it. weezer rawked the house with songs from all of their albums (they played more pinkerton than i thought they would!) and did a cool version of 'big me' as i guess a tribute to the band that would play next. foo fighters were rawkin as usual, with dave grohl bullshitting the crowd between sets, but then took it down a notch and did a solo version of 'everlong' but of course with the last chorus brought it back up along with the rest of the band. (sidenote: a few days before the concert, i caught dave grohl playing an acoustic solo version of everlong on fuse, and it totally blew my mind. seriously. i had to change my pants afterwards.)
there were two things that kind of bothered me though. these two things have always bothered me when i go to any concert, i just think that they kept coming up over and over since there were so many people at the concert. first, what is the deal with people who dont rawk out at concerts? if i go to a concert, regardless of whether i know who the band is, i usually at LEAST to a little toe tapping or some sort of subtle grooving to the music (well, assuming the music is good) i saw soooo many people who were just sitting in their seats (another problem about large venues...) and no head nodding, no tapping, no smiling, no nothing. no emotion. no acknowledgement of the intake of music. well, at least most of these zombies applaud at the end of the song. the second thing that irks me about concerts are the people who wear the shirt of the band... has no one heard of the phrase 'dont be that guy'??? did this lesson skip a generation? there were all of these kids who were wearing weezer and foo shirts (some, no doubt, bought them at the stands next to the consessions and immediately wore the into the arena) when i was a kid, everyone, even total strangers, would make fun of you if you wore the shirt of the band. these kids dont realize that they are practically stamping a 'IM A GIANT TOOL' tattoo on their foreheads... silly kids.
rawk!
